The CIA is attempting to arm Kurdish opposition forces within Iran as part of a covert operation authorized by the Trump administration, aimed at destabilizing the Islamic Republic and potentially igniting internal civil unrest, sources familiar with the matter told a U.S. news outlet.
Iranian Kurdish militant factions, boasting thousands of operatives entrenched along the frontier in Iraqi Kurdistan, have publicly urged Tehran’s armed forces to abandon their posts, signaling preparations for possible escalated action amid the Israel-U.S. war against the Persian nation.

The Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA) frames the Iranian Kurdish coalition as “an active part of recent pushback against the Islamic Republic, including the major protests that shook Iran in late 2025 and early 2026.”
A JINSA article on the subject claims the organized Kurds offer the United States a “capable and effective on-the-ground partner with whom to work” to weaken the Islamic Revolution.
Iranian Kurdish parties are also seeking political assurances from the Trump administration before committing to any military effort, according to Lebanese news outlet Al-Mayadeen.
President Trump held discussions on Tuesday with Mustafa Hijri, the leader of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI), according to an insider. The KDPI has been among the factions facing stepped-up operations by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as Iranian Kurdish opposition forces are expected for an anticipated ground operation into western Iran.
